Let's get this out of the way up front. Hellbound isn't the next Squid Game, no matter how many articles out there keep wondering if it is. Sure, they're both Netflix shows that hail from South Korea, and yes, they each offer some adult genre thrills, but that's where the similarities end.

As much as we love Squid Game, Netflix's biggest show to date, Hellbound is an entirely different beast, which means that any comparisons between the two are lazy and even quite problematic. It's like recommending Loki to someone who enjoys Line of Duty. Just because they're both genre shows shot in the same language, it doesn't mean they're comparable.

Unwarranted Squid Game comparisons do a disservice, not just to Hellbound, but also the Korean entertainment industry at large. From star-crossed romances (Crash Landing On You) and zombie period dramas (Kingdom) to revenge fantasies (My Name) and political thrillers (Designated Survivor: 60 Days), the incredible shows available on Netflix alone prove that there's far more to Korean TV than just Seong Gi-hun and that fateful game of marbles.

But what about Hellbound itself then? Is it actually worth your time? Even before you press play on episode one, it's important to know that you're in safe hands with Yeon Sang-ho, the director behind Train To Busan and its unhinged sequel, Peninsula.

Here, Yeon pulls double duties as writer and director in another story concerned with the afterlife, but this time round, zombies are nowhere to be seen. Instead, Hellbound opens with three giant ape-like creatures that attack and violently murder a man in broad daylight. Once he's beaten to death, the monsters burn the corpse until all that remains is an ashy skeleton. With their work complete, the three otherworldly beings jump back to whatever hellish realm they came from.

As an opening scene, this attack is both exhilarating and slightly bewildering, but in the best way possible. Yeon wastes no time thrusting you into the show's unique premise, which we soon discover is actually hinged on visits from "angels" that predict your exact time of death. Once the countdown comes to an end, that's when those beastly creatures come and send you straight to hell.

Just as that bizarre opening scene throws you off balance, Hellbound then pulls the rug out from under you again in a very different way. Because this isn't the hi-octane fantasy horror that you might be expecting, especially after that initial attack. Instead, Yeon slows things down with a twisty police procedural that explores the impact of these visitations on society at large.

As you might expect, religious fanatics soon latch onto the idea that angels have stepped in to send sinners to hell. To exploit these horrific developments and increase their influence further, these cultists band together to form the New Truth Society, led by Jeong Jin-soo.

Yoo Ah-in charms in this quite, eerie role, and he's joined by a wider cast who all excel here too, reminding viewers that charismatic, moving performances can be — and are often — found in genre fare too. Early standouts include Yang Ik-june as the world-weary detective, and Kim Hyun-joo as Min Hye-jin's hopeful attorney, but they're far from the generic archetypes that these descriptions might suggest.

Throughout this six episode story, each of these main characters will surprise you with how they navigate the ethical problems raised by the arrival of angels and demons on earth. The script's measured pace takes plenty of time to delve deep here, but the show remains engaging throughout thanks to all this character work and the constant sense of foreboding that instils each frame.

Surprisingly enough, the monsters from the opening don't appear as much as you might expect, and that's actually a blessing on two fronts. Not only is their CGI a tad shoddy, but more importantly, this show's biggest strength is the underlying dread that permeates throughout, whether we're focused on crazed YouTubers or a hellbound mother who's hellbent on protecting her kids at any cost. Too many rampant demons would detract from all that.

Let's just hope that unjustified comparisons between Hellbound and Squid Game don't end up detracting from Yeon's impressive work here. There's plenty more ground left to cover with this premise and all those final twists, assuming of course that the ground doesn't open up suddenly and drag this show down into the vast oblivion of Netflix's ever growing catalogue.
